About Nextrient
Nextrient is a nutrition reference tool built on the USDA FoodData Central (FDC) database — the most comprehensive publicly available source of food composition data in the United States.
Data sourcing
All nutrient values are sourced directly from USDA FoodData Central and are refreshed when the USDA publishes new datasets. No data is estimated or interpolated.
Methodology
Nextrient uses a multi-step data pipeline to transform raw USDA datasets into structured, queryable nutrition pages:
- Raw CSV data from USDA FoodData Central is imported and normalized
- Foods are deduplicated — when both Foundation and SR Legacy entries exist for the same food, the Foundation record takes priority
- Nutrient values are validated against expected ranges and flagged if anomalous
- The final dataset covers over 2,000 foods across 25 categories with up to 65 nutrients per food
All values are presented per 100g to enable direct comparison. Serving size conversions use USDA-defined portion weights where available.
Updates
Nutrition data is refreshed when the USDA publishes new FoodData Central releases, typically once or twice per year. The most recent data incorporated is from the USDA FDC October 2024 release.
