Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that the body can synthesize through sun exposure on the skin. It is essential for calcium absorption, bone growth and remodeling, and immune function. Adults need 15 µg (600 IU) per day; adults over 70 need 20 µg (800 IU). Very few foods naturally contain significant amounts of vitamin D.
